Let’s talk about the various ways people refer to psychics. I’ve been called a clairvoyant, an intuitive, a medium, a psychic medium, telepath… even an empath.
What does it all mean?
Well, I’m a psychic – that’s the best way to describe my gift. That word signifies that I have an active sixth sense which can tell me more than I might otherwise know about a client’s past or future, his or her hidden hopes and fears, and even allow me to get in touch with their deceased loved ones. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines psychic as being “marked by extraordinary or mysterious sensitivity, perception, or understanding.”
Then what is a medium? If you have ever seen me in person you’ll know without a doubt that I’m not a medium. I’m a small. Super petite, in fact. Seriously, a medium is a ‘go-between’ – someone who is the connecter between the living and the dead. Merriam-Webster says it this way: a medium is an individual held to be a channel of communication between the earthly world and a world of spirits. I talk to the dead, so I’m a medium as well as a psychic.
Now how about clairvoyance – what is the specific meaning of that term? I love the derivation of this word. It comes from the French for clear “clair” and for seeing “voir”- to see. A clairvoyant is clear seeing. I like that! The implication is that everyday people don’t see clearly – it’s only with the wide open heart that one perceives what truly matters. Merriam-Webster defines it as “being able to see beyond the range of ordinary perception. “
Certainly psychics have extra-sensory perceptions.
As for being an intuitive –well that fits too. I cherish what Albert Einstein said:
The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.
– Albert Einstein
There are so many signals to pick up if you are attuned to the deeper vibrations in life. Below the surface, there is a plethora of information and impulses, which can be palpable to a ready receiver. The Free Dictionary says intuition is “the act or faculty of knowing or sensing without the use of rational processes; immediate cognition.”
Finally, I’d define the term empath as someone who is connected to another at the soul level, understanding them as though they were in their very skin. To be empathetic is to lower every barrier and defense from the other, lowering those resistances right down to the ground. You literally feel what the other person feels. The Free Dictionary says it is “identification with and understanding of another’s situation, feelings, and motives.” That’ putting it mildly. When I’m empathetic, which is very often, it affects my entire nervous system and can be exhausting. It’s a soul-melding that gives me enormous insights into my client’s true nature.
In conclusion, all these words are ways to describe what I do and what many psychics do – getting in touch with the under-surface of life. What doesn’t meet the eye gets us right in the gut!
